Wheelchair and Speech: Restaurant Apps and Accessibility

Dealing with a speech impediment can be a real party crasher sometimes. Honestly, it’s like my words play hide-and-seek just when I need them most. One minute, I’m chatting away fine, the next, it’s like they’ve all decided to take a vacation without telling me. It’s like that friend who says they’ll be there in half an hour but shows up two hours later—totally unreliable! And it’s not just me who notices. My son, at a young age, saw someone making fun of me at a drive-thru. Talk about a gut punch. He didn’t quite grasp the whole speech thing—to him, I’m just Dad—but he definitely picked up on the awkward laughter, which was rough. But hey, even tough moments can lead to good things, right?

COVID was a dumpster fire in many ways, but it did give businesses a kick in the pants to get creative. And that creativity? It gave us smartphone apps and curbside pickup. For them, it was a smart move. For people like me, with speech and/or mobility issues, it was like winning the lottery! Seriously, these restaurant apps and curbside pickup have gone from “oh, that’s handy” to “how did I ever live without this?!” During the pandemic, they just popped up everywhere, and honestly, I was worried they’d disappear when things went back to “normal.” But thankfully, they’ve stuck around. For those of us with speech difficulties, or for anyone rolling around in a wheelchair, these things are basically essential. No more repeating myself a million times and watching for confusion in someone’s face. It’s like having a personal translator, but in app form!

Picture this: you’re at a drive-thru, and your speech is having a rebellious day. Trying to explain your order? Nightmare! But with an app? You just type it out, every weird customization included. No fuss, no repeats, no confused looks—just a perfect order, every time. It’s like ordering pizza online; you add that extra cheese, specify light sauce, whatever your quirky taste desires, nobody gets it wrong and it’s simple and clear.

And then there’s the wheelchair situation. Navigating a busy restaurant can feel like a military operation sometimes, especially during peak hours. Crowds, narrow aisles, table arrangements—it’s like an obstacle course. But curbside pickup? Pull up, get your grub, and go. It’s like a drive-thru but without the need for me to get out. It’s beautiful. And pro tip: become a regular. If you keep going to the same place, the staff starts to recognize you, they remember your order, and they become pros at getting your food into the car. It’s all contactless, convenient, and avoids any potential awkwardness. All in all, these services have seriously upgraded the dining-out experience for a lot of us. They’ve gone from being a nice-to-have to an absolute game-changer for accessibility, and for that, I’m forever grateful!
